SUBJECT: Herod PTO Newsletter 9.20.2026

First-Class Hospitality: Friday Meeting Recap!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the gate for our first PTO General Meeting and (:-) Hour with the Principal on Friday! It was wonderful connecting with so many parents, teachers, and crew members over coffee, donuts, and lively school conversation.

Special thanks to Principal Hewett for piloting the morning and sharing the flight plan for the year ahead. We appreciate your dedication to making our school community a first-class experience for everyone!


Here are a few quick highlights for the week: 

  • The FALL Dance tickets are going fast - read below for more details and use the link to purchase tickets.
  • Jet Patrol Appreciation Day - this is our first-ever official day of appreciation for our 5th grade students who show up, rain or shine, to keep the other students safe at pick-up and drop-off. Read below for more details on the plan to shower them with affection!
  • PTO Membership & Family Sponsorship -Thank you to all the families who have already joined the PTO! If you haven’t yet, it’s never too late. Through our Family Sponsorship program, your contribution helps maintain the level of support the PTO provides to our school and teachers. Every bit counts! 
  • Lost & Found Baggage Claim - Did your student leave some of their gear at the gate? Our Baggage Claim (the school Lost & Found) is currently overflowing with left-behind jackets, water bottles, and lunchboxes. Please check the claim area before we permanently reassign these items at month-end.
    Pro Travel Tip: Labeling your student's gear helps us return lost baggage directly to their seat! 


Final Call for Boarding!
As we wrap up Week 7 and prepare for the next leg of our journey, thank you for flying with us. We have some incredible destinations on our autumn horizon, so make sure your tray tables are stowed and your seatbelts are fastened - we have a Hispanic Heritage Potluck, Book Fair, Fun Run, and many more exciting destinations on the horizon.

Sept 24th | Jet Patrol Appreciation Day

Help us say a massive thank you to the dedicated 5th-grade students who keep our crosswalks and hallways safe every school day, rain or shine! 

These responsible student leaders wake up early and stay late to protect our school community, and now it is our turn to celebrate their hard work. We have lots in store to show our appreciation - pizza, games, treats, and more!

You can dine in and enjoy Bingo from 5-7pm or place a to-go order - all of it counts toward the evening's donations to the Herod community! 

Oct 7 | Hispanic Heritage Month International Flight

Get your taste buds ready for takeoff! 

The Dual Language program invites you to board for the annual Hispanic Heritage Potluck Fiesta. Whether you want to contribute a dish to our in-flight menu or simply come try the incredible food, all passengers are welcome!

  • Date: Wednesday, October 7th
  • Time: Setup starts at 5:00 PM 
  • Gate (Location): The Herod Multi-Purpose Room (MPR)
Backpacks will have a flyer with the link to register your dish or RSVP to save your seat!
Oct 12-16 | BOOK Fair

Herod Jets In-Flight Library: The Scholastic Book Fair! 

Our annual Book Fair is clearing the runway, and we are ready for a first-class reading adventure. All passengers are invited to stop by the library to browse and upgrade their personal book collections. Check our flight itinerary for special events during the week:

  • Flight Window (Dates): October 12th – 16th
  • Gate (Location): Herod Library
  • Night Flight (Literacy Night): Thursday, October 15th
  • Co-Pilot VIP Dining (Grandparents' Lunch): Friday, October 16th

We are hitting the ground running as we plan an amazing year for our 5th Grade Class. Sign up now to join in on the planning or to just be in the know on upcoming events and activities! 


5th grade dues are $75 for the year and can be paid in full or in $25 increments - you choose!

*There are a limited amount of scholarships available upon request

NEW this year!  We have an official Yearbook Club that will have its first meeting in October.

Parent permission is required - complete THIS FORM. 

This club is open to 4th and 5th graders who want to tell the story of our School Year with creativity and fun!

REMINDER Drop-Off and Pick -Up

Drop-off

All students enter the school at the front, either through the drop-off line, walk-up, or via buses that park on Jason Street.

Please help us keep ALL students safe with these reminders.

  • 5th Grade Students, School Staff, Crossing guards, and Police officers are present to keep you and the students safe. You are expected to comply with their directions at all times.
  • There is no parking on the school side of Jason Street, between the circle drive and Mullins - this area is reserved for BUSES ONLY.
  • Follow all city traffic safety rules and posted signs. (Ex. no double parking, park on the right side of the street only, etc.)

Communication and Engagement Tools

We know you get a lot of digital notifications, so we want to make communication as easy and painless as possible. We use three specific tools to stay organized.

Here is what they are and how we use them:

  • ParentSquare: Our official home base. Look here for school-wide announcements, emergency updates, and notes directly from your child's teacher and school staff. 
    Make sure to download the app so you never miss a critical alert.

  • Membership Toolkit: Our friendly neighborhood hub for all things school community!  Visit here when you need to buy spirit wear, get your child's birthday marquee announcement, pay for your annual PTO membership, or look up a classmate's contact info for playdates.

  • Social Media: We have Facebook and Instagram for posting about PTO events, news, and upcoming events! Click the links to access, like, and follow our pages. 
Get VIPS Approved

In order to volunteer on campus or during field trips, you will need to register with HISD’s VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools). You need to sign up each academic year that you want to volunteer.

Jetway

The Jetway will be open most school days from 7-7:30 am.  

PTO Volunteers work at our on-site school store, The Jetway, and help kids shop safely and learn valuable life skills. The kids can buy pencils, erasers, fidget items, pens, stickers, and more within the budget you set for them!


VOLUNTEERS RUN THIS STORE! SIGN UP TO HELP!

This is a great way to spend 30 minutes with your kid and get involved in the wonderful JET family. PTO will ensure someone will help guide you during your first shift and show you the ropes
